Love, you KNOW how much I loved our last Book Club pick. Battle Of The Bookstores by Ali Brady had me so utterly consumed, that the next book I’d read had a pretty high bar to reach.

But there’s something to be said for amnesiac vampires and powerful witches trying to hide their identities.

This book was a ton of fun, and here’s why you’ll love it:

  1. A witch who cannot be chill.

We start with Zelda — a centuries-old witch determined to live a normal, non-spell-casting existence as a yoga instructor in California.
Sounds dreamy, right?

Except… control? Never met her.

Within a few pages she’s accidentally setting her bedroom curtains on fire and we quickly learn that abandoning magic isn’t as simple as pretending it doesn’t exist. Zelda wants a peaceful, ordinary life, but her magic keeps leaking out like a chaotic faucet someone forgot how to shut off.

What unfolds is a delicious mix of self-discovery, magical mishaps, and a desperate attempt to figure out how to responsibly wield power instead of pretending she doesn’t have any.

It’s cozy chaos with a supernatural bite, and Zelda was pretty hard not to like.

  1. Enter: Peter. A very confused vampire.

Peter shows up confused, memory wiped, and inconveniently gorgeous. He’s been sent to Zelda by Reginald — Zelda’s old friend and professional troublemaker — who insists they need each other.

Peter starts receiving notes from a very mysterious and threatening source telling him to get back to Chicago immediately, and that’s when Zelda finally gives in and decides to help.

So now we have:

  • a reformed witch with a morally grey past

  • a vampire who literally doesn’t remember if he’s trustworthy

  • a road trip

  • and a series of mysterious notes

And suddenly, their shared goal shifts from simply delivering Peter to safety… to uncovering how his memories were erased, who’s been threatening him, and whether Zelda’s past is going to destroy her future.

  1. The road trip energy is all slow burn fun.

This book thrives in the little moments: stolen glances, awkward confessions, magical accidents, late-night vulnerability, and that slow unfurling of connection between two people who aren’t sure whether they’re drawn together by fate, danger, or something soft and hopeful.

The more miles they travel, the more they reveal:

Peter discovers fragments of himself (not all of them flattering).

Zelda confronts the parts of her history she’s carefully buried.

And the tension? Slow. Burn.
Like “I’m kicking my feet” slow burn.
Like “if they don’t kiss soon I’m filing a formal complaint” slow burn.

When they finally start trusting each other, it pays off. Big time.

  1. Magic, mystery, and a dash of moral messiness.

This story explores magic in a way that feels refreshing: not as glitter and wands, but as responsibility, identity, and danger.

Zelda isn’t running from her abilities. She’s running from what she did with them.

Peter isn’t just missing memories. He’s missing context:
Was he a villain? A victim? A weapon? All three?

And the mythology? So much fun.
We get supernatural politics, history, secrets, grudges, and genuinely tense moments without losing that cosy, humorous romantic tone.

It’s paranormal rom-com energy with emotional depth, and I enjoyed that balance.

Love, this one surprised me in the best way.

It was whimsical without being silly.

It left me smiling, entertained, and already wishing for more from this world. Which, good news for me, there are two more books in this series.

If you’re craving:

– supernatural romance
– road trip shenanigans
– identity, redemption, and found-family warmth
– a spicy, slow-burn connection
– and witch-vampire tension that feels like a good time

…you’ll enjoy this pick year round.

Light a candle (just… maybe don’t use magic), grab a blanket, and enjoy the ride.

Happy reading, love,
Demi xx
